Eléctrica del Valle de Mexico, a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, has signed an agreement with Clipper Turbine Works, a subsidiary of US manufacturer Clipper Windpower.

Clipper will supply 27 wind turbines, each with 2.5 MW in capacity, to build the La Ventosa wind farm in Mexico.

With this development, EDF Energies Nouvelles is getting closer to building the 67.5 MW wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Construction is due to be completed by year-end 2009. The electricity generated will supply several Wal-Mart stores under a power purchase agreement that has already been signed.

enXco, EDF EN's Us subsidiary, will provide supervision of the construction activities as well as be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the project.

As per the information available, sited in La Ventosa, within the Istmo region in the State of Oaxaca, one of Mexico's windiest areas, the project will be the first in Mexico to utilise multi-megawatt wind turbines.

The wind turbines will be built at Clipper's 330,000 square foot manufacturing facility located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Clipper's 2.5 MW Liberty is the largest wind turbine built in the Americas.         

For Clipper, the deal follows its recent 50:50 JV with BP Alternative Energy to develop the Titan wind project, a 5,050 MW South Dakota-sited wind energy project formerly known as Rolling Thunder. The project is expected to be constructed in multiple phases and, if completed, will be the world's largest wind facility.
