Thermal Borges has started to supply electricity to the network

Abantia and Comsa Emte set up the first facility in the world to combine solar thermal and biomass

  • Abantia and Comsa Emte meet the committed deadlines in a record time of 20 months put the plant into service
  • The facility represents an investment of 153 million euros and will supply power to 27,000 households, avoiding the generation of 24,500 tons of CO2
  • During construction, more than 350 jobs have been created, which have become in 30 direct jobs in the operating period

In a record time of twenty months, Abantia and Comsa Emte have set up the Termosolar Borges, the first hybridization plant in the world, located in the town of Les Borges Blanques (Lleida), Spain.

The plant, which represents an investment of 153 million euros, completed in November 2012 the synchronization testing phase of the steam turbine and has already started supplying electricity to the network. The installation of 22.5 megawatts (net) of power begins now the yield curve up to achieve maximum power, when it has the capacity to supply power to 27,000 homes, thereby avoiding 24,500 tons of CO2 emission into the atmosphere, much equivalent of removing from circulation about 100,000 vehicles a year.

Abantia and Comsa Emte engineering and construction teams, in collaboration with local authorities and all the providers-such as MAN equipment for turbines, INTEC for boilers and SIEMENS for the solar-effectively developed this project to be started in late March 2011.

Hybridization System

This biomass hybridization system allows the operation of the plant for 24 hours, thus achieving a better use of the installation. Capturing of sunlight during daylight hours, using parabolic through technology, is complemented overnight with the operation of the biomass units, which main fuel is waste forest biomass, and also energy crops and agricultural residues as a complement.

The plant has 2,688 solar field parabolic troughs, 5.5 meters in diameter and 12 meters long each, in the 96 acres occupied by the property.

Abantia

Abantia is an international group specialized in applied engineering solutions that focus on diversifying its business lines to provide global solutions and value-added facilities, mechanical assembly, maintenance and construction of turnkey projects. Abantia was founded in 1944 as a company specializing in EPC projects, Installations (electrical, HVAC, control systems..) mechanical works and Operation & Maintenance (O&M). Since then, it has evolved and developed into a comprehensive enterprise specialized in applied engineering. Currently, Abantia serves in all productive sectors of society. This diversification can cover many different areas, from energy to health, transport and communications. It employs more than 2,300 people, and the group closed 2011 with a turnover of 279 million euros, up 10% over 2010 and a profit of 8.8 million euros, representing a 37.5 % more than the previous year. The business group is committed to international activity and has a permanent presence in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Qatar.

Comsa Emte

Comsa Emte is the second largest unlisted Spanish group in the field of infrastructure and technology. The business group adds a turnover of over 2,000 million euros, employs 12,000 people and has a stable presence in 18 countries. Comsa Emte has three business areas: Infrastructure and Engineering, Services and Technology, Grants and Renewable Energy.

COMSA EMTE activity in the field of energy is focused on the promotion, operation and maintenance of power generation, facilities under the special regime. Their projects are focused in the areas of wind energy, photovoltaic (on floor and roof), thermo solar and biomass. It also has facilities dedicated to the processing of slurry, degassing, thermal drying of sludge and forest biomass.
